Distinctive Unit Insignia

Description/Blazon
A gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86cm) in height overall consisting of a red and white Japanese bell surmounted by a red cross with a maroon ring issuing from the handle, looped in front of the bell and inscribed "PREVENT RESTORE PREPARE" in gold letters.

Symbolism
The bell, or "dotaku," represents Japan and alludes to warning, care and purity, which are all of concern in the field of dentistry. The cross represents medicine, which is referred to again by the colors, white, red and maroon. Red is used also as a reference to Japan.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 29 August 1984.  It was cancelled effective 30 September 2016, when the unit was discontinued.
